[Review Methods]

Posted by ObsidianSnow - February 15th, 2009

In case you've gotten a review from me (After around September 10th, 2009), I've probably directed you to this post. This is just basically where I'll explain how I reviewed your piece and why it got the score it did.

I do reviews in sections, so the sections and their explanations are as follows:

--------------------------------------
-------

Flow: How well your piece carried itself through its duration. If it's too repetitive, you might lose points here, as well as if your transitions don't seem completely coherent. Imagine the music like a river - if the water stops flowing, dissappears, or does something else that indicates that it might not be a river after all, then you'll lose points.

Balance: Pretty self-explanatory - this is the balance in sound between each of your voices. If nothing is overpowering anything else, and nothing is getting overpowered, then you'll get a good score on this one. This is also where things like panning, reverb (sometimes), and generally the use of the sound's directional placement come in.

Themes: Your melodies and harmonies will make up your themes. If they're diverse but coherent, and I can follow them, you'll get a good score. Being too repetitive or having themes that don't make sense together will catch you losing points.

Effects: How well you used your effects such as delay, reverb, distortion, flange, phase, filter mods, and other things (pretty much anything that affects the sound or adds to it without being considered a "voice"). This is pretty self-explanatory as well. If your effects are used well and add to the piece, you'll recieve a good score. Using really interesting and creative ones can help out your score, too, but isn't necessary to achieve a good score.

Extra: I have a bonus system for reviewing when I find meaning in a song or something indicates that it has just a unique/extraordinary quality in it. Note that the highest score I'll give to a song without bonus is 9.90/10. However, I will give more than 0.10 bonus points if I deem it appropriate. Also, if my initial review score is lower, then I will be more likely to give slightly more bonus points, as the last 0.10 points should naturally be extremely difficult to get.

Overall: This is just my general overview of what I thought. This is also where I'll tell you your exact score based on my methods.

--------------------------------------
-------

I hope that this helps everyone to understand what their score from me means.

Power to you, Newgrounds!
